چکیده
Objectives: To compare results of Enders and titanium elastic intramedullary nailing for treatment of fractures of shaft femur in children between 5-15 years. Method: Twenty patients between age group of 5-15 years were treated with stainless steel Enders nailing and twenty patients of same age group were treated with titanium elastic nailing. Results were compared using Flynn etal 2001 criteria. Results: Average operative time was 36.2 minutes for Enders and 34.6minutes for titanium nailing. Average hospital stay was 6.21 days for Enders and 7.4 days titanium nailing. Average union time was 9.44 weeks in Enders and 9.52 weeks in titanium group. Average full weight bearing was achieved after 10.28 weeks in Enders and after 10.21 weeks in titanium group. Average full range of motion was achieved after 9.97weeks in Enders and after 9.50weeks in titanium group. Nail exterioration, nail irritation, superficial infection and asymptomatic lengthening were complications. Sixteen patients of Enders and fifteen of titanium group had excellent result as per Flynn etal2001 criteria. Rest had satisfactory results. There were no poor results. It indicated similar results in both groups. Conclusion: We found no statistically significant difference in outcomes of fractures treated with either method in clinical setting. Both methods have their own advantages and disadvantages.

Management of pediatric femoral shaft fractures with long intramedullary kirshner wires
I ntramedullary titanium elastic nails (TEN) have been used for treatment of the pediatric patients with femoral shaft fractures in the last 15 20 years. They are load bearing devices and are flexible to allow bending. Small incisions are required for introduction of these nails and they are easy to remove. High cost is a disadvantage. However in the developing countries, where cost and afforda...
متن کاملTreatment of pediatric femoral shaft fractures by stainless steel and titanium elastic nail system: A randomized comparative trial
PURPOSE Literature suggests that the lower modulus of elasticity of titanium makes it ideal for use in children compared with stainless steel. Better fracture stability was observed in association with titanium nails on torsional and axial compression testing. However, stainless steel nails are stiffer than titanium counterparts, which may provide a rigid construct when fixing paediatric femora...
متن کاملBiomechanical comparison of stainless steel and titanium nails for fixation of simulated femoral fractures.
Flexible intramedullary nails are commonly used to treat femoral fractures in children. This study evaluated the biomechanical differences between stainless steel and titanium nails when securing transverse and comminuted fractures in a synthetic femur model. Retrograde flexible stainless steel and titanium nails placed in a divergent "C" pattern were mechanically tested, and axial rotation and...
متن کاملComplications of titanium and stainless steel elastic nail fixation of pediatric femoral fractures.
BACKGROUND In vitro mechanical studies have demonstrated equal or superior fixation of pediatric femoral fractures with use of titanium elastic nails as compared with stainless steel elastic nails, and the biomechanical properties of titanium are often considered to be superior to those of stainless steel for intramedullary fracture fixation. We are not aware of any clinical studies in the lite...
متن کاملElastic Stable Intramedullary Nailing of Femoral Shaft Fracture-Experience in 48 Children
Background: Femoral shaft fractures are an incapacitating pediatric injury accounting for 1.6% of all pediatric bonyinjuries. Management of these fractures is largely directed by age, fracture pattern, associated injuries, built of the childand socioeconomic status of the family. We retrospectively evaluated the use of elastic stable intramedullary nail (ESIN)in surgical management of femoral s...
